Research is also a major activity: Deep under the Alps, physicists from all over the world are seeking to
unravel the mysteries of the Universe at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane. At a depth of 1700 m
below the mountain range lies an exceptional scientific site protected from cosmic rays, and used for
neutrino research.
The ONERA’s state-of-the-art test centre is also located in Savoie. This is the French centre for aerospace
research and one of the most strategic sites in French aeronautics. It is equipped with 4 wind tunnels,
including the most powerful in the world, where the cream of French and European aeronautical, space and military equipment is tested.
The energy sector is also one of the specificities of Savoie, which is the leading hydroelectricity producer in France. It is also the historical cradle of solar power, where one of the world leaders in solar
technologies was created: the INES (National Institute of Solar Energy).
Finally, one of the largest European railway construction sites is located in Savoie: The construction of the longest tunnel in the world, with a budget of €8.6bn, 164 km of tunnels between St Jean de Maurienne (Savoie) and Suse (Italy). The new Lyon-Turin rail link will start operating by 2030. Intended for the transport of goods and passengers between France and Italy, it will be an important link in the new trans-European network which connects the economic capitals of the continent.

The department of Savoie has been recognised for many decades for its dairy and cheese production. There are 2,000 milk producers in Savoie, collecting 325 million litres per year. With 32,000 tonnes of cheese, of which 5 Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) and 3 Protected Geographical Indications (IGP), Savoie represents 15% of the national production of AOC and IGP cheeses.
Savoie has a reputation for its gastronomy and agri-food industry with very specific skills. There are many different players at all levels working in the agri-food industry in Savoie, all of them under the Savoie Mont Blanc brand.
