Metalwork activities are particularly predominant in Haute-Loire:
- The Brioude area for automotive subcontracting,
- The Puy-en-Velay area for metal construction,
- the Yssingeaux area for subconstracting in precision mechanics.
For textiles, the department is highly specialised, with excellent skills, especially with the
recent arrival of new activities from the luxury trade.
Traditional skills are also continued, such as the manufacture of ribbons and fabrics (such
as elastic), and scarves and straps.
MAIN BUSINESS SECTORS
Focus on … THE GREEN PUY LENTIL
The Green Puy Lentil is the most important pulse AOP in France and makes Haute-Loire the 1st and only department producing pulses in the region. The 653 AOP producers export their Green Puy Lentils to 70 countries. Close to 4000 hectares are sown each year. The turnover for this sector reaches €8M. Among the emblematic companies, we can find the family business Sabarot and Trescarte.
Sabarot started sorting Green Puy Lentils in 1900! It then became the leader on this market with direct purchases from producers and the implementation of cutting-edge techniques (bagging and labelling automation). The company is now renowned throughout the world for its products: seeds, cereals, pulses, etc.
Established near the Auvergne volcanic highlands, Trescarte has been, since 1959, another historic player in the AOP Green Puy Lentils. The company opened a second lentil collection centre to be closer to local producers. Its emblematic brand, “La Ponote” is over 100 years old… but La Ponote are actually the people living in the Puy-en-Velay. The “La Ponote” emblem is a lacemaker, as Le Puy-en-Velay is also particularly renowned for its fine lace still produced locally today.
